Rain Down On Me
I have been trying to create decent rainy images in Second Life for ages, but as I am one of the laggiest people I know when it comes to SL photography I have found that most weather systems crash me as soon as I hit the shutter button, if the rain rezzes at all. I have tried using texture overlay layers in Photoshop, but I’ve never been 100% happy with the result. My recent image for the stance poses being a case in point.
I have seen some pretty cool Second Life rain photographs recently on flickr and have finally discovered the secret – yeah, I am that slow! The wonderful rainy images of late aren’t down to super fast fiber connections and souped-up graphics cards, but to Xavier Novelli’s very clever rain! His system uses only animated textures, which produce a more realistic rain and better yet, without causing server or video card issues. Animated textures do not cause lag… Genius!!
This image is pretty much as it came, apart from cropping and a slight contrast tweak, so I can imagine Xavier’s rain, in combination with the wet skin/clothing possibilities that the new Materials enabled viewers offer, making for some amazing SL photographs in coming months. Thank you Xavier!
